How to Care for Fresh Cut Flowers So They Last Longer

Pear4az Team2025-08-203 min read

Fresh cut flowers bring instant life to any room, but they fade fast without proper care. Here is how to keep your bouquets looking vibrant for a week or more.

Trim the Stems

Cut 1-2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle before placing in water. This opens more surface area for water absorption. Re-trim every 2-3 days.

Use Clean Water and a Clean Vase

Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers. Wash your vase with soap and water before use, and change the water every 2 days. Fill with lukewarm water, not cold.

Add Flower Food

Most bouquets come with a flower food packet. Use it. The sugar feeds the blooms and the citric acid inhibits bacteria. If you run out, a pinch of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice work too.

Keep Away from Heat and Fruit

Direct sunlight, radiators, and ripening fruit all shorten flower life. Ethylene gas from fruit causes flowers to wilt faster. Place your bouquet in a cool spot away from the fruit bowl.
